MovementDangDang which dances for us who are isolated by body

Suyeun Lee, Shine Jung, Meily Lee

On June 9, people gathered at the Light House in order to practice flash mob for the performance on 15th in Gwanghawmun square. Min Jeoung Kim who directed this flash mob and actors came to teach the movements to the other participations. There was not an air conditioner in the Light House on the very hot day. However, Min Jeoung Kim and actors did not lose smiles and taught the movements.

Q. Can you introduce us MovementDangDang?

We are an organization, which makes new performance languages, connecting to all sorts of arts, based on movements. In other words, we perform that combines dance and play on a stage.

Q. How did you participate in the flash mob in the Refugees day?

At the frist time, Hwang Pil Que lawyer, who was in ‘Empathy (a public interest lawyer’s group)’, suggested us to make flass mob for refugee day two years ago. He said ‘we are composing a Flash mob. Which dance routine is good? I am asking you because your organization dances and performs.’ After it, I start to know about Refugee Week and Refugee Day. We kept participating every year.

Q. Are there different meanings on this performances than other performances that you did before?

We thought about this flash mob with the Center of Refugee Rights in South Korea. First meaning of our dance is from the performance that we did in May. We made dance about ‘people who are isolated.’ We changed the dance a little for ‘refugees’ and we danced with a thoughts; ‘what if we are refugees’, and with lots of meaning for ourselves.

Q. Did you make all the movements of Flash mob?

Our actors made one by one and we put them together.

Q. If there is a special movement that you want to introduce to us?

Youngsuk Wang: This movement means a ‘shock’ when refugees and migrant workers came to Korea, because there is some racial discrimination in Korea. This expresses a shock of it.

Minjeung Kim: This has many different meanings, ‘I do not have anything but I am innocent and guiltless.’

Um... also there is a movement - ‘wipe the sweat’. In this, sweat does not mean that ‘it is hot’, but ‘we are tired and isolated.’ Find meanings by yourself! We all made these based on thoughts for people who are isolated.

Q. Did you have any interest in refugees before you did flash mob?

Before I participated in, I did not know about refugees. After it, I found why this happens and checked today again how the laws of refugee changes. I start to get interested in this after the flash mob in two years ago. I do Flash mob, because I hope that lots of people know about refugees well. I saw many things are distorted on the Internet. I hope it is time to know about the truth.

Q. In the ‘Refugee Week Surfing’ program, what is the new name for refugees that you made?.

Let’s talk about this together (to actors). Today, I asked to an eighth grader, he said ‘the freedom of souls’ and ‘vagabond’. (Minjeung Kim): I want to give ‘my brave friend’. (An actress): I want to put ‘people who are moving’. (the other actress): ‘people who walk together’

Q. Previous performances, that MovementDangDang did, were philosophical. What meaning does this Flash mob have for MovementDangDnag?

We are trying to make new languages via a performance. We want to deliver a concept; we are a team and live together for each other on the Earth. It has the same message that we want to deliver as we participate in Refugee Day. We are very happy to have some small roles in the society. It is a meaning of action.

Q. Does the organization usually think about the people who are isolated?

We think we are isolated. When we perform, we have to be very careful and do together more about it. We are the people who have to live together with them, without a thinking; ‘we have to help them’. If we think, we are also isolated and everyone is isolated. By doing so, we are in the world that we live together (take care each other) and the society that we walk together. I do not change the thought of refugees. They are the person who we need to live together and walk together.

Q. Do you have something to say lastly?

Minjeong Kim: I wish more than 1000 people come to the event on 15th.

Youngsuk Wang: I wish people who make a mistake on the performance buy us delicious food.

Soojeung Lee: Through this time, we gather together. I hope people learn something that they did not know before and people are not isolated.

Among people there is an island

I want to go to that island

Isn't the world beautiful

Since there is a traveler

Isn't the world more beautiful

Since we are all togather

-Among the performance

On a hot day, everyone jumped and jumped together with the same dream to be together with refugees. It increases our passion with the temperature. We all looked beautifully when we thought of each meanings of our movement for the refugees via an art form rather than daily speaking. The Earth is beautiful, because of us who are trying to hug and protect isolated vagabonds.
